Overview
Labs everywhere are shifting toward automated workflows to streamline processes, boost productivity, minimize errors, and reduce costs. Robotic liquid handlers for automated multiplexed pipetting are one of the most significant of these upgrades across biotech. At V&P Scientific, Inc. we strive to offer automation-friendly solutions that seamlessly adapt to a wide variety of robotic liquid handlers, including those made by Opentrons, Hamilton, Tecan, Dynamic Devices, Beckman, Agilent, CyBio, and more.
V&P’s robotic liquid handler friendly automated mixing device, SpinVessel®, has revolutionized the way homogeneous mixing is done and has become part of standard workflows in labs across the globe. Since SpinVessel’s introduction in 2019, and its SLAS New Product Award win in 2020, V&P has continued to innovate and improve SpinVessel with new offerings each year.
What’s New in Version 4
The latest upgrade to SpinVessel is a change to the motor drive itself. We shifted to a custom stepper motor that delivers:
- Increased torque capabilities
- A shorter overall Z-height, saving 14mm
- A 25% wider shaft diameter for improved stability
Why Z-Height Matters
Beyond the performance improvements, the shorter profile is especially advantageous for robots with tight Z-height constraints, such as the Hamilton Star. Z-height constraints can limit the pipet tip options scientists can use to clear the SpinVessel height and safely maneuver around the robot deck. With the new SV4 SpinVessel, some customers have been able to run their 300mL SpinVessel on Hamilton liquid handlers for the first time, while others have gained the ability to use larger, longer tips for increased throughput and decreased dead volume.
And because the SV4 keeps the same SLAS microplate standard footprint as previous versions, it drops into existing deck layouts with no repositioning required.
The Bottom Line
Version 4 brings more torque, more stability, and 14mm of recovered Z-height, all in the same SLAS-standard footprint. For labs working within tight deck clearances, that 14mm can be the difference between a workaround and a workflow.
